To competently practice Psychotherapy, the College of Nurses of Ontario (2024) requires that:

"...nurses need knowledge, skill and judgment. Nurses are accountable to reflect on their practice, determine their individual learning needs, developing a learning plan annually. Nurses continually reflect on their practice and determine what best helps them achieve their objectives (for example, taking refresher courses or obtaining certifications). CNO does not require nurses to obtain specific additional training or certification (e.g. courses, hours, supervision, etc.) with respect to psychotherapy. Nor does CNO approve or endorse specific continuing education programs or certifications"

Based on this guidance from our regulatory body and the previous work done by the Nurse Psychotherapy Association of Ontario, CFMHN, RNAO, WeRPN, CNA, OAMPH, and the thousands of practicing nurse psychotherapists in Ontario, the following standards are being applied to the online registry.

1. Licensed to practice Nursing in the province of Ontario as evidenced by a valid license with the CNO in good standing.
2. Attestation that you have read and will follow the Standards of Practice for Nurse Psychotherapists (Nurse Psychotherapy Association of Ontario, 2022).
3. Attestation to the comprehensive knowledge required to practice psychotherapy with your specific population and in your environment with the necessary supports for your level of experience (As per the CNO Scope of Practice - Authority, Context and Competence).
4. An up to date reflection and learning plan for the current licensing year. This will be your proof of reflection on your practice, determining your individual learning needs. Please submit your learning plan that you have prepared for the CNO for this year - it must contain at minimum 1 goal and evidence that is related to your psychotherapy nursing practice.
5. Attestation to commit to ongoing mentorship and peer feedback.
